Bench designed by pierre jeanneret around 1955 and reintroduced in 2020.
manufactured by cassina in italy.
continuing its research into the furniture created for the city of chandigarh, cassina has included the kangaroo low armchair in the hommage à pierre jeanneret collection. This collection is distinguished by its pure lines and modest materials, expressing a refined balance between modern european ideals and the traditional spirit of india. Originally designed for the hall of the city’s general hospital, while also appearing in many private residences, this low chair is defined by the distinctive “z” shaped sides, formed by a sequence of three loosely triangular coplanar elements arranged in continuity. Both the seat and backrest feature the collection’s characteristic woven pattern set within a wooden frame. An optional cushion is available to provide additional comfort and protection.
this product is a tribute to pierre jeanneret, a central figure in the creation of chandigarh.
his experience in india lasted until the end of his life in 1967. His close and lasting connection with the local environment led him to unite essential forms with simple materials, creating a meeting point between european modernism and the traditional indian spirit.
the chandigarh project is regarded as le corbusier’s most mature work, bringing together his poetics, technique, and ideology, in keeping with his desire to explore and contribute to the culture of architecture and design.

about the designer:
though overshadowed by his cousin le corbusier, pierre jeanneret was a visionary of modernist architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with charlotte perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with jean prouvé. In the early 1950s jeanneret joined his cousin in chandigarh, india, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision.
about the manufacturer:
in a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, cassina has created the i maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, charlotte perriand, charles rennie mackintosh, gerrit thomas rietveld, franco albini, frank lloyd wright and marco zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50’s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with the cassina perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought.
