A 19th-century German Bodensee (Lake Constance) cabinet or wedding cabinet, dated 1832. Crafted from solid oak with inlays in maple and plum wood. Restored to a ready-to-use condition, with a beautiful original patina.
The slightly curved cabinet body, standing on pressed ball feet, can be divided vertically using wedge connections; it is made of oak with a moulded plinth and a slightly upturned cornice. Two doors, hinged on external brass hinges, are constructed of a frame with flattened panels, each featuring a central inlaid star. The bevelled corners are decorated with rectangular band inlays in a panel-like pattern, whilst the central panel is characterised by larger-scale inlays of various woods. At the top edge, the inscription ‘MVL’ ‘1832’ can also be read, which refers both to the year of manufacture and to the fact that this piece of furniture was most likely brought into a marriage as a dowry in that year (initials of the bride and groom: MVL).
The right-hand door closes with an original lock, whilst the left-hand door can be locked or unlocked using an original forged bolt when the right-hand side is open.
Traces of the roughing plane can still be seen on the back panels, which are fastened to the body with wooden pegs; these were, of course, worked by hand.
