✦ Why Johnson Brothers ✦
Started in 1883 by two brothers who bought a bankrupt pottery — opportunistic genius. Their father had married into pottery royalty, so they were practically born to it. One brother eventually got too big for his boots and left to start his own rival pottery. Another packed his bags and moved to New York to conquer the American market. They survived the Depression, two World Wars and fierce competition. The final twist? When production eventually moved to China in 2003, the plates still read "England 1883." Cheeky to the end.
