A hand-thrown Japanese studio pottery tea storage jar finished in a rich tenmoku glaze that deepens from warm iron brown to smoky ash grey along the body. The vessel reflects the aesthetic of the Japanese Mingei folk craft movement, emphasizing functional form, natural materials, and expressive kiln effects.
The rounded jar is paired with a domed lid and retains its traditional bamboo cord wrap at the neck, originally used to secure a cloth seal over stored tea leaves. The interior reveals classic reduction-fired tenmoku glaze with visible throwing rings and kiln variation, hallmarks of high-temperature stoneware production. The base carries a calligraphic kiln mark in white slip.
A beautiful example of Japanese studio pottery with strong presence and authentic folk craft character.
