The rounded body displays a rich brown patina developed through age and use, while the underside bears a four-character Xuande-style seal mark.

Such burners, known as xianglu, were used in scholar studios, domestic altars, and temples for the burning of incense during contemplation, ritual, or daily life. The pierced lid allows fragrant smoke to escape while protecting the burning incense within. Portable censers of this type were especially favored for moving incense through rooms or carrying between altar spaces.
