Chinese antique tables and cabinets of low heights are often used on the Kang. The kang in northern China is an important part of the house. It is a brick platform built into the wall. It offers a large flat surface for sleeping and writing, or things one wishes to do while keeping warm in a comfortable heated space. Fuel was added from the outside to keep the kang warm. If one wishes to read, or write or paint while seated on a kang, a small low table would be most desirable. This rectangular table with a waisted apron. cabriole legs mounted on a frame would serve the purpose.
Although the table has been restored, the its old age has been preserved as exemplified by the rough grainy surface on the underside of the table top. The texture is the result of melted lacquer from hot weather. When dried, the lacquer formed this sandy grainy surface. A new coat of lacquer was applied to the finish preserving the old patina.
The elegance of this table can enhance a living room as a support for a piece of sculpture, a beautiful plant or display of orchids.
