What a lovely and rare antique curiosity! This gorgeous sterling silver "vesta case" (English term; named for the Roman goddess of the fire and hearth) or "match safe" (USA) is by Joseph Gloster Ltd, hallmarked Birmingham, 1927.*
Finely hand-engraved with elegant scrolling foliate decoration and central monogrammed cartouche, this beautifully-made example retains its original suspension loop and remarkably still contains period matches—an uncommon and charming survival!
Vesta cases are small, portable containers designed to protect early, highly-combustible, friction matches—sometimes called "lucifers"—from moisture and accidental ignition. Popular between the 1860s and 1940s, these cases are heavily collected for their historical, artistic, and functional value, often bearing a serrated edge for striking (photo 7), and a hinged lid for easy access. Affluent consumers would commission or purchase hallmarked cases which the jeweler would often inscribe with their initials.
Produced by noted Birmingham silversmith Joseph Gloster Ltd*, a maker well-known for high-quality silver smalls and vesta cases, this piece functions equally well as a collector’s object, desk accessory, or cabinet curiosity. Gorgeous to view with your silver collection, and a hard-to find addition to antique/vintage tobacciana collections.
