A dramatic and highly sculptural pair of Renaissance Revival “throne” armchairs, dating to the late 19th century, executed with exceptional depth of carving and architectural presence.
Each chair features an elaborately pierced and carved back centered with a classical urn overflowing with fruit and foliage, surrounded by cascading scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and layered ornament. The crest rails rise to a commanding height, giving the chairs their unmistakable throne-like silhouette.
The frames are crafted in solid hardwood, likely walnut, with turned supports, scrolling arms, and stretcher bases, all contributing to a sense of movement and craftsmanship rarely seen in later reproductions. The carving is deep, crisp, and dimensional—this is work that required skilled hands, not factory simplification.
The seats are upholstered in a rich burgundy velvet, trimmed with nailhead detail, providing a strong visual anchor and contrast to the intricate openwork backs.
At 55 inches high, these chairs are intentionally commanding—designed not just for seating, but for presence., 55"h x 27"w x 23"d (seat)
