British Maritime Folk Art: A Royal Navy Second-Rate Under Full Sail
Circa 1865–1870
This exceptional mid-Victorian "woolie" captures the majesty of a Royal Navy Second-Rate ship of the line during the twilight of the age of sail. Depicted in a commanding port-side view, the vessel is shown under a dramatic display of full sail, with every yardarm and shroud meticulously rendered in tight needlework. The ship cuts through a deep, solid blue sea, set against a quintessential "banded" sky where horizontal layers of wool in varying blue and cream tones create a sense of atmospheric depth.
The craftsmanship indicates a highly skilled hand, utilizing a dense cross-stitch that has preserved the wool’s vibrant saturation for over 150 years. Patriotic details are prominently featured: a large Red Ensign billows from the mizzen mast, while a long red celebratory banner streams from the main mast. The black-and-white "Nelson Checker" hull, synonymous with British naval dominance, provides a sharp horizontal anchor to the vertical complexity of the rigging.

Historical Context: The Second-Rate Powerhouse
In the 1860s, "Second-Rate" was anything but an insult. These were massive two-decked wooden walls of the Royal Navy, typically carrying between 80 and 98 guns. By the date of this woolie (1865–1870), the Navy was rapidly transitioning to ironclads and steam power. This artwork likely represents a sailor’s nostalgic tribute to the traditional sailing ships that were fast becoming relics of a legendary past.

The colors remain remarkably bright, particularly the "British Red" of the ensign and banners, which are often the first to fade in lesser examples. To ensure its preservation for the next century, the piece has been mounted behind Museum Glass, which virtually eliminates reflections and provides essential protection against UV degradation of the natural fibers. less
