The creature, with its curved tail and rows of triangular teeth, may represent a lion-bird hybrid.

The Duala were known for their intricate woodcarvings, including prestigious stools, made in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Designed for prominent members of society, these stools feature curved seats and an openwork latticework with symbolic animal figures such as snakes, birds, and crocodiles.

The stool has a beautiful patina with numerous abrasions on the surface. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
