This is a stunning example of 1980s Post-Modern art pottery by the renowned American studio potter, Keith Alan Fortley (1960–2013). Handmade in his Hilo, Hawaii studio, this substantial centerpiece is a masterclass in "trompe l'oeil" ceramic art—designed to mimic the fluid, delicate movement of a blooming flower or draped silk.
The sculpture features a striking biomorphic form with deep, saturated pink outer "petals" that give way to a shimmering, opalescent white central bloom. The pearlescent glaze catches the light beautifully from every angle, making it an ideal "statement piece" for a dining table, mantel, or entryway console.
Scale & Substantial Build: This is an exceptionally large and heavy specimen, measuring 15 inches in length and weighing over 5 pounds. Its substantial weight provides a sense of high-end quality and stability that is rare in such delicate-looking forms.
Authenticity: The base is personally incised with the artist's "Fortley" signature and still retains the original black and gold studio foil label: "Exquisitely yours, K. Fortley – Handmade in U.S.A."
Era: Circa 1980s. A perfect addition to a Memphis-style, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary art collection.
Excellent vintage condition. The glaze is vibrant and the form is structurally sound. There are two flea bites on an edge, this is common with the delicate "ruffled" style of Fortley's work, but it does not distract from the overall beauty or impact of the piece (see photos).
