Executed in soft-paste porcelain … Read more A rare pair of derby porcelain animal figures representing a recumbent stag and doe, circa 1765–1770. Executed in soft-paste porcelain with coloured enamels, the bodies are decorated with iron-red spotting and set on naturalistic bases with applied foliage.

this composition is recorded by peter bradshaw and can be traced from the early dry-edge version b8 through the patch period e99 and related bocage version e100, with later developments (bradshaw, pp. 35, 123-125, 432). The present pair represents the mid-18th-century version of the model.

the subject is closely linked to derby, where the stag appears in the heraldic crest of the city. The modelling is refined and expressive, with well-balanced forms and carefully observed detail.

a particularly well-preserved example of a classic derby model, valued for its scale and strong collector interest.

doe: weight 482 g, height 12 cm (4.7″), length 17 cm (6.7″), depth 8.2 cm (3.2″)

condition
stag: excellent antique condition; all elements intact; a very small firing crack to the base.
doe: small chip to one leaf; otherwise excellent antique condition with full preservation of the decoration and modelling.
