A mid-18th century Derby porcelain figure of a recumbent stag, modelled before a flowering bocage tree. The piece reflects early English porcelain production, with expressive modelling and characteristic enamel decoration.
The model relates to the Derby “Stag and Doe at Lodge” series and corresponds to the bocage variant E100, identified by its sculptural tree and applied flowers.
The stag holds particular significance in Derby’s heraldic imagery, which explains its repeated use in early factory designs.
Old labels to the underside reference Bernard Watney and Henry Sandon and describe the figure as “Definitely early Derby”, with an additional note indicating “Early Derby - 1754”.
Such larger bocage models are less frequently encountered and are especially sought after by collectors.
