This exceptional designer armchair from Carl Straub is a striking example of the fusion of sculptural form, innovative materials, and superior seating comfort. with its powerful, clearly defined silhouette and generous proportions, it appears less like a classic piece of furniture and more like a striking object in the room – a statement at the intersection of function and art. Designed in the 1970s, it draws inspiration from Brutalism and the Space Age.
Of particular note is the rare finish of this model: While most examples were crafted with lacquered fiberglass shells, this armchair features high-quality leather upholstery on the fiberglass elements of the backrest and side panels. This finish lends the piece exceptional depth and warmth, underscoring its exclusive character. The black leather of the seat is in impeccable condition, supple and displaying a subtle, authentic patina that further emphasizes the armchair's timeless appeal.
The leather-covered fiberglass elements show slight signs of age-related wear, which, within the context of the overall design, should be understood as an expression of its history. There is a small area of slight abrasion on the back. Overall, the armchair is in very good, well-maintained condition. Concealed beneath the distinctive side panels are four original casters, allowing for discreet mobility without compromising the clean lines of the design.
The designer and manufacturer Carl Straub represents a design philosophy that combines industrial materials with meticulous craftsmanship, always seeking a dialogue between functionality and aesthetic appeal. This armchair is a compelling testament to this philosophy and a rare collector's item that holds its own in both curated living spaces and gallery-style interiors.
