A Superb Quality And Extremely Fine Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Rosewood Sofa Table, Or Library Table, Of Extremely Rare Small Proportions, Having Wonderfully Figured Rectangular Top with Drop Flaps To Each End, Over Shallow Frieze with Two Cedar Lined Drawers To Front And Two False Drawers To Reverse, Retaining Original Leopards Mask Brass Ring Drop Handles, Raised On Very Elegant Double Swept, Reeded, End Supports Terminating On Original Brass Castors.
This is a really quite wonderful and rarely found little sofa table, which boasts very small proportions, the kind which we have rarely found before, in combination with exceptional quality in its constuction and timbers and incredible elegance. It is small enough to not dominate the centre of a room, or even to just tuck into a corner, whilst at the same time retaining incredible presence.
The exceptionally figured rosewood timbers would have been quite expensive to purchase when new, as would the cedar wood which is used in the drawer linings and the lovely leopards mask handles which are in place both on the actual drawers at the front, as well as the false drawers on the reverse.
Another exceptional feature is the swept ens supports which add yet another further level of elegance to the overall look and feel of the piece.
Sofa tables were relatively commonly found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and as the name suggests they were originally designed to sit behind a sofa, although a common misconception is that they were meant to butt right up against the sofa itself.
Actually they were normally designed to sit a few feet away from the sofa, hence the false drawers on reverse. That said they also look quite happy pushed right up against the back of a sofa and are such useful, versatile items of furniture.
As with all of our items this regency rosewood sofa table has been attended to in the traditional manner at our workshops before being offered for sale, by our highly trained and skilled antique furniture restorers including a light clean and natural wax polish to ensure that it is in retail condition and ready to be placed immediately into the home or workplace.
