Standing … Read more A commanding presence in any collection, this large antique Chinese cloisonné horse is a masterwork of the enameling tradition. Standing approximately 16.5" tall and measuring 18.5" in length, the prancing figure is covered head to hoof in densely worked polychrome enamel on a rich turquoise ground — a hallmark of fine Chinese cloisonné production from the late Qing through Republic Period (early 20th century).

The scrollwork is exceptional in its complexity: continuous ruyi-cloud and foliate motifs in cobalt, crimson, sage, white, and lavender fill every surface, including the legs and underside of the neck. The bronze structural elements — a finely ridged mane, articulated ears, tack hardware, and a braided tail — retain their original patination and show the hand-finishing characteristic of period workshop production. The elaborately enameled saddle blanket features black and green ground panels with floral and cloud reserves, adding compositional depth to an already visually rich object.
