A fine and historically interesting English Mochaware cylindrical tankard, dating to the mid-19th century.

The vessel features a classic plain loop handle and is decorated with a wide brown-gray central band displaying four distinct dendritic (tree-like) patterns, often referred to as a "seaweed" or "mocha" decoration. This central motif is framed above and below by double thin bands in brown and white, while a wider, vibrant blue band encircles the upper body.

A notable feature is the applied cream-colored plaque on the front of the tankard, which displays a molded Royal Crown above the cipher "VR" (Victoria Regina) and the words "QUART IMPERIAL".

Width: 6 3/4 inches (17.1 cm) from rim to handle.

Dendritic Decoration: The iconic tree-like decoration was achieved through a fascinating chemical reaction. The artisan would apply a drop of an acidic coloring agent (historically a mixture called "mocha tea," often containing tobacco juice, stale urine, and metallic oxides) to the wet, alkaline slip on the vessel's surface. The acid would rapidly bleed out into the organic, fern-like shapes seen here.

Imperial Standard Measure: The "VR Quart Imperial" plaque signifies that this tankard was officially certified to hold an exact Imperial quart. During the reign of Queen Victoria, taverns and public houses were legally required to use standardized, stamped measures to ensure patrons were not shortchanged on their ale.
