Here we have a large gorgeous cobalt (electric) blue conical shaped vase appears to be from the mid 20th century, … Read more Here we have a large gorgeous cobalt (electric) blue conical shaped vase appears to be from the mid 20th century, possibly between the 1960s - 1970s. It is a thick-walled hand-blown glass as evident from the subtle striations on the outer wall and the very apparent ones on the base, left when the maker is turning and forming the shaped. The pontil mark at bottom of the vase appears to have been finished smooth.

Although it's conical shape is reminiscent of the classic mid century modern aesthetic, it could easily be placed in any contemporary or traditional setting, perhaps even in a postmodern-inspired one.

FYI, this beautiful blue color is achieved when cobalt oxide or cobalt carbonate is mixed in the glass melt. A variation of this process can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia about 4000 years ago. See less
