The Couroc Company was founded in 1948 by Guthrie Sayle Courvoisier in Monterey California. The company produced many different types and shapes of trays and boxes from a proprietary formula resin material that went by the name Phenolic, from 1948 until their closure in the early 1990s. Courvoisier’s wife, Moira, was a child prodigy artist, who had her first art show in 1927. She became chief designer for Couroc, and worked on the different inlay techniques involving woods, metals, shell, coins, plants and crystals. Oftentimes the material used for the trays was sourced locally, with abalone, coral, and seaweed collected by divers among the rugged Monterey Coast. Throughout the decades, the husband-and-wife team led skilled artisans in crafting unique pieces that rose to high popularity and were sold in many high-end department stores. If you look closely at the motifs, you'll see that they are incredibly intricate and even if they look the same, upon closer inspection, you will see that each piece is slightly different, so no two are ever exactly alike. This ensemble consists of three rounded corner trays. The two small trays each display a varying roadrunner motif, while the large tray displays a lone quail. Together the three trays weigh 2 lbs. 11 oz and measure as follows:
(2) Roadrunner trays: 8½” x 8½” x ½” W/D/H apiece
(1) Quail tray: 12½” x 9½” x ½” W/D/H
In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear that includes slight fade spots to the left of the larger quail trat (see all photos closely, please) that do not detract from the beauty or utility of the tray.
For a rounded corner Couroc tray aficionado, this ensemble should be a must have or the perfect gift for someone who is!
