Felix Vallotton 1865-1925 - Master of the modern woodcut. Swiss-born and French-educated. One of the great woodcut printers and modern painters of the late nineteenth century, early twentieth century. This original woodcut, "La Paresse," is one of approximately 180, is signed in blue pencil and numbered "52." Prints from this very rare series are in many of the most prestigious museums of the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art
Printed on cream woven paper in 1896, La Paresse" is one of the artist's best-known and most sought-after woodcuts and is considered Vallotton's main graphic work.

Swiss-French painter and printmaker Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) was an active member of the French avant-garde group Les Nabis. He was highly recognized for the development of the modern woodcut, which embodied his themes in still life, landscapes, portraits, nudes, day-to-day life scenes, and other subjects drawn in a captivating combination of flat and naturalistic manner.
Provenance: Private Collection in Los Angeles, CA. Authenticated by Kornfeld Auction, Bern Switzerland whom sold a similar print from the same series 12/9/2024 for $145,388 USD. Many examples of signed prints from this series selling for over $50,000.
Artist Bio:
Félix Édouard Vallotton. December 28, 1865 – December 29, 1925 was a Swiss and French painter and printmaker associated with the group of artists known as Les Nabis. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. He painted portraits, landscapes, nudes, still life, and other subjects in an unemotional, realistic style. Born in the Swiss city of Lausanne in 1865 and raised in a modest, Protestant household, Vallotton moved to Paris as a 16-year-old aspiring artist, situating himself at the heart of the contemporary art world.
