Pair Japanese Satsuma Style Porcelain Vases, Hand-Painted Court Ladies & Gilt Decoration, Meiji
A finely decorated pair of Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain vases, hand-painted with elegant court ladies in traditional dress, dating to the early 20th century (Meiji–Taishō period).
Each vase features delicately rendered female figures in flowing, layered kimono inspired by Heian court costume, set within a serene landscape scene. The figures are executed with refined linework and soft enamel coloration, conveying a sense of movement and quiet elegance characteristic of Satsuma decorative arts.
The bodies are richly ornamented with polychrome floral motifs and intricate gilt scrollwork set against a deep ground, creating a striking contrast that enhances their visual presence. The combination of figural reserves and densely decorated borders reflects the aesthetic developed for export wares during the late Meiji period.
Hand-painted and hand-decorated, these vases exemplify the craftsmanship of Japanese workshop production intended for Western collectors in the early 20th century.
Well-proportioned and highly decorative, they display beautifully as a pair and work equally well in traditional, eclectic, or globally inspired interiors.
