A substantial antique French fireplace surround cast in iron and finished in a weathered faux-limestone paint treatment, designed in the Louis XV/Rococo taste. The serpentine breakfront mantel shelf sits above a shaped frieze centered by an oval cartouche flanked by scrolling rocaille strapwork, descending to a bold asymmetrical shell-and-floral crest above the firebox opening. The canted jambs are fitted with tall recessed panels edged in scrolling foliate motifs, terminating in shaped cabriole-style feet. This piece was constructed in four sections, as was typical of period French iron mantels of this scale and weight for ease of transport and installation; the original eye bolts that once joined the sections have broken, though the mantel remains stable and securely assembled under its own weight. A compact electric fireplace insert on a stand sits within the firebox opening and is included, offering the option of ambient flame effect and supplemental heat, or the surround may be used purely decoratively or fitted for a gas or wood-burning insert.
