The mosaic is edged in brass, framing gradient tones of emerald, jade, and celadon. Each piece is cut and set by hand, the arrangement recalling traditional craft and modernist abstraction, its center punctuated by a stylized motif in contrasting ochre. Resting on tapered wooden legs capped in brass sabots, the table is equally striking styled alone or as a pair. Sold and priced individually. Genaro Álvarez (1915–1982) was a celebrated Mexican artist whose mastery of mosaics placed him at the forefront of the country’s 20th-century artistic renaissance. Trained under Carlos Ruano Llopis and Diego Rivera, Álvarez absorbed both the classical traditions of Mexican art and the bold experimentation of modernism. He developed a style he called symbolic expression—a fusion of abstraction and cultural narrative—marked by vibrant color, intricate geometry, and richly tactile surfaces. His work moved fluidly between public and private spheres, from large-scale murals commissioned in Mexico, Chicago, and Kansas City, to intimate mosaics that bridge craft and sculpture. Álvarez’s art reflects the layered identity of modern Mexico: rooted in heritage, alive with symbolism, and unafraid to explore the human condition through form and texture. Condition: Great vintage condition. The mosaic surface shows light wear with a few small losses consistent with age and use. Brass edging and sabots display a natural patina with minor surface marks.
