This striking black and white Brutalist ceramic bowl evokes the name of an Icelandic volcano, Hekla, but was in fact produced by a small manufacturer in Belfeld, Holland in the 1960s. It was on trend with the Fat Lava style coming out of Germany the time.
The design features a sgrafitto technique, with black matte glaze filling the incised pattern in the unglazed white clay. Consistent with organic exterior, the interior is roughly glazed in white or clear.nThe bowl follows the trends of its era, but it timeless and fits into modern organic, Scandinavian, artistic and Boho interiors. It can be used as a bowl for functional art, or as a stand alone accent piece to add visual interest and texture.
