Interesting background:
This artwork is a needlepoint or crewel embroidery piece titled "Rebecca's Portrait" (also known as "A Posy" or "The Flower Basket") based on an original illustration by the famous American artist Jessie Wilcox Smith (1863-1935), a prominent illustrator during the Golden Age of Illustration, known for her tender depictions of children. The image originally appeared on a postcard in 1909 and was later used for flower seed packets. It also served as a cover illustration for Good Housekeeping magazine. The imagery features a young girl in a yellow dress and wide-brimmed bonnet standing under willow branches, holding a large basket of colorful flowers. COA issued by Danbury Mint.
What makes crewel different from other types of embroidery is its use of wool specifically as the fiber of choice. True crewel embroidery uses a 2-ply wool thread that is called crewel, which gives the embroidery its name as well as the art a unique textured, layered, 3D effect. Crewel dates back to Medieval times, if not earlier. The most well-known ancient piece dates back to the Bayeux Tapestry, which was made in England and given to France nearly 1000 years ago. The craft ebbs and flows in popularity and made a recent resurgence in the 1970s with more contemporary colors, patterns and designs and again today - with a focus on the comforting feel of antiquity, yesteryears and times at grandma's house.
