The underside retains its original solid plank base with natural oxidation consistent with age. The iron hinge features slotted screws, and the hand cut copper reinforcement straps secured with early nails remain intact.

The interior contains two carved ink cavities with deep period ink saturation and end grain staining, confirming extended 19th century use. Along the front edge are three terraced pen rests designed to hold quill or dip pens.

The wood is exceptionally dry and resonant with tight vertical grain typical of late 19th century lumber. Visible hand tool marks and accumulated patina within the carved recesses further support age and authenticity. Likely American or Central European folk craftsmanship.
