On offer is a classic English burr walnut chest-on-stand so gorgeous that even if you live in a minimalist’s environment of charcoal matte walls, black granite and stainless steel appliances, aim a ceiling spot on this piece and let it bask in its beauty.
Fitted with five drawers and brass pulls, the design represents a style that was especially popular in the late 1600s and early 1700s. Although this design is most often linked to the William and Mary period (circa 1690–1700), it also displays features found in early Queen Anne furniture.
The chest is finished with burr walnut veneer, appreciated for its tight, swirling grain. Top-quality examples from this period usually include, as seen here, distinct banding along each outer surface, including the drawer edges, offering eye-catching contrast with the main veneer. The drawers are equipped with brass drop handles set against engraved backplates with matching “batwing” escutcheons, or keyhole covers.
The chest rests on a separate base set with barley twist legs all connected by a flat, shaped stretcher for extra stability. The whole piece stands on bun feet, another hallmark of 17th-century English craftsmanship.
Originally created as a luxury item for a wealthy family, this chest represents an evolution from earlier, chunkier oak models as cabinetmaking advanced, making the use of thinner, more refined walnut veneers possible.
Given how much rugged history a top-heavy, more than 300-year-old piece of furniture likely endured, it should be noted that it's not unusual to find antique chests from the early 1700s paired with later stands from the 19th century carefully styled to blend with the original.
Signature/Maker’s mark: nonexistent. Additional dimensions: chest height-35”; stand-41.25”w x 23.5”d x 15.75”h.
