A vintage bisque porcelain wall mask, titled "L'Inconnue De La Seine" probably made by Goebel. Glaze is so thick that markings are hard to read. This was designed by Arthur Möller in 1935 and produced by Goebel Germany in the 1960s.
The mask is inspired by the tragic story of a young woman found in the Seine River in 1900, known for her serene and peaceful appearance, which captivated many artists during the avant-garde period. L'Inconnue de la Seine (literally 'The Unknown Woman of the Seine') was an unidentified young woman whose death mask became a popular fixture on the walls of artists' homes after 1900. She inspired numerous literary works. In the United States, the mask is commonly known as La Belle Italienne. Her face was also used as a cpr dummy face marking her " the most kissed face in the world."
