An 1888 Meriden Britannia Company pickle castor, model no. 204, executed in quadruple plate with a distinctly Aesthetic Movement design vocabulary incorporating Japonisme influence.
The architectural frame features a finely worked arch with beaded edging, centered by a reclining nude female figure integrated into the structure—an uncommon figural detail within American silverplate tableware of the period. The lower apron presents geometric and engraved ornament consistent with late 19th-century decorative metalwork.
The clear glass insert, cut in a bold block pattern, provides contrast to the intricate frame and emphasizes the utilitarian elegance of the form. Retaining its original tongs and marked to the base, this example reflects Meriden’s high-quality production during the height of American aesthetic silverplate design.
