History and Description
This desk is a re-issue of the original desk design by Harvey Ellis for Gustav Stickley circa 1903.
Viking Ship History
The discovery of the Viking ship, Gokstad in 1888 was an international sensation. In 1893 Norway exhibited an exact replica at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago after sailing it across the Atlantic.
The popularity of the Gokstad discovery resulted in Viking ship decorative motifs in many objects ranging from souvenirs to high art. Tiffany & Co. celebrated ancient American ties to Norway with the imposing Viking Punch Bowl.
Then, in 1903, the discovery of another ship in Oseberg added more enthusiasm to the trend toward “all things Viking” just at the time when Arts and Crafts was emerging in America. Arts and Crafts tile makers, weavers and potters used the Viking ship motif extensively.
Internationally acclaimed Syracuse, NY based art pottery, Adelaide Alsop Robineau created her Viking Ship Vase in 1905. Harvey Ellis, designer for Gustav Stickley, used the Viking Ship motif for one of his inlay designs.
