This expressive piece embodies the refined abstraction and symbolic power associated with the Bwami society traditions of the Lega peoples. Hand-carved in wood with a beautifully aged dark patina and contrasting pale facial surface, the figure features a striking heart-shaped face adorned with rows of drilled scarification motifs, elongated proportions, and a contemplative seated posture characteristic of traditional Lega sculpture. Originally created as a ceremonial teaching object used within initiation practices, works such as this conveyed moral philosophy, status, and ancestral wisdom through highly stylized form.
