Presenting a masterwork of regional craftsmanship: the Pennsylvania Bench-Made Curly Maple Gate Leg Table.
The Allure of Curly Maple
This isn't just any wood; it's highly figured Curly Maple, also known as "Tiger Maple" for its distinctive, shimmering horizontal stripes. Historically prized in Pennsylvania for its radiant sheen and deep honey tones, this wood grain creates a 3D "optical illusion" that appears to move as you walk around the piece.
Artisanal Bench-Made Construction
Unlike mass-produced furniture, "bench-made" means this table was crafted by a single skilled artisan from start to finish.
* Heirloom Quality: Built with traditional joinery like mortise-and-tenon and hand-fitted pins for a lifetime of stability.
* Pennsylvania Heritage: It embodies the "Penn's Woods" tradition, where local cabinetmakers utilized native hardwoods to create simple, graceful designs that outshine modern alternatives.
Versatile Design for Modern Living
The classic gate leg (or drop-leaf) design is the ultimate space-saver.
* Compact to Grand: Keep the leaves down for a slim hallway console or sofa table. When guests arrive, swing the "gates" out to support the leaves, transforming it into a full-sized dining surface.
* Functional Elegance: Featuring tapered legs that provide a light, airy silhouette in any room.
Invest in a piece of American history that brings the warmth and brilliance of Pennsylvania's finest wood into your home.
As with most pieces of preowned furniture this table although given a thorough restoration still exhibits faint dings and surfaces scratches commensurate with use and age. The restoration included a complete removal of the old finish via sanding and then a new French polished finish of twelve hand rubbed applications of clear blonde shellac. The surface was then given a coat of beeswax polish. The glue joints of all the leg joints have been redone. Please look carefully at the pictures as they make up an important part of the description. Questions are always welcome.
