This vintage French stoneware crock pot features the word MERGERE penciled on the bottom along with the number 1344.
“Mergere,” hints at its history and suggests a dealer or scholar catalogued and numbered the pot and guessed at its use.
It could be a French antique piece with the distinctive loop handle often seen on confit pots or containers used for preserving food in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The pale-yellow glaze and warm honey-brown interior are classic traits of French provincial stoneware. It remains in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, damage, or blemishes of any kind.
