Circa 1920's, the seaman is accompanied by the ship's pet rat who is complete with leather ears and tail. The carver took great care to delicately paint the metal fasteners on the slicker coat, even though he thought painting a face unnessary. This nautical example of folks making do with whatever was on hand to use, is a reflection of the ingenuity it took to create something from nothing. Found in a Maine estate sale, it will bring pleasure to it's new owner, a hundred years later. See less
