The shaped square … Read more Antique Japanese Imari bowl in the classic export palette, dating to the Meiji period, late 19th century. The shaped square form with deeply lobed corners reflecting the sophisticated taste of the period's finest Arita kiln production.

The interior is richly decorated in the traditional Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze coral, and generous gilt throughout. A central circular medallion presents the classic flower basket motif — a lavish arrangement of peonies in a gilt vase set before a garden fence — surrounded by alternating panels of phoenix birds among flowering prunus and peony branches, and deep blue ground reserves filled with bold scrollwork and gold foliate decoration. Pink peonies and turquoise accents add freshness to the composition.

The unglazed foot rim is consistent with Arita manufacture; the base is unmarked, as is typical for Japanese Imari made for the Western export market.

No chips, cracks, or hairlines. Gilding is strong throughout. This piece is one of the prettiest I've found and almost decided not to list it.

A presentable and collectible piece that works beautifully in traditional, chinoiserie, or eclectic interiors — equally at home displayed on a plate stand, used as a centerpiece fruit bowl, or incorporated into a collection. See less
