A collectors pair of early production year (circa 1965 to 1975) Pierre Paulin 'Mushroom' lounge chairs for Artifort, Netherlands, based on construction, materials and style of signature tags, these date to the late 1960s to early 1970s. Designed by Pierre Paulin in 1959, the Mushroom chair quickly became one of the most recognizable and sculptural seating forms of the 20th century, embodying the playful modernism and ergonomic experimentation that defined Paulin’s work for Artifort.
This early pair retains their original Artifort manufacturer’s tags, including the brushed aluminum Artifort identification strip and separate “made in the Netherlands” plate mounted to the underside, a tag configuration consistent with Artifort production from the 1960s through the early 1970s. The internal foam and construction further support this earlier production period, making these an authentic vintage collector’s example rather than later reissues.
The chairs remain in their original upholstery and will require reupholstery, presenting an excellent opportunity for the next owner or designer to select a new textile while preserving the integrity of the original forms. The current fabric shows age and wear as expected, and the interior foam has hardened with time, a common trait of early examples and further confirmation of period authenticity.
Sculptural and organic in silhouette, the Mushroom chair was designed without visible legs, creating a continuous flowing form that appears almost grown rather than constructed. Its enveloping shape provides surprising comfort while functioning as a statement piece from every angle. Few chairs capture the spirit of Space Age and European modernist design as successfully as Paulin’s Mushroom.
Highly sought after by collectors and designers alike, early production Mushroom chairs with original Artifort tags are increasingly difficult to source. Once professionally restored, this pair will serve as exceptional seating in a high-end residential interior, gallery setting, or important design collection. An enduring icon of 20th century design and a cornerstone of Pierre Paulin’s celebrated collaboration with Artifort.
