There is a profound intimacy in a piece designed for a personal ritual. This 19th-century Korean traveling vanity—or mirrorgu—is a relic of the late Joseon Dynasty. Crafted for a lady’s private use, it served as both a sanctuary for cosmetics and a portable stage for preparation.
The exterior is clad in striking Zelkova wood veneer, chosen for its "ghostly," expressive grain that shifts in the light. This deep, moody wood is punctuated by original yellow brass hardware, featuring symbolic butterfly hinges and hand-forged corner plates that speak to its "Campaign" style durability.
The Reveal
When the brass knob is engaged, the upper section unfolds to reveal a standing mirror (reaching a total height of 12.5 inches). Below, a single hidden drawer provides sanctuary for small treasures or accessories.
Historical Provenance
Similar examples of this specific craftsmanship are held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) and the National Folk Museum of Korea. This box represents the transition of luxury from royal households to the wealthy elite of the 19th century.
