During World War II, these instruments were crucial for navigation before GPS, allowing sailors to measure speed and distance.

A taffrail log is a device used to measure a ship's speed through the water. It is typically towed behind the vessel, and its rotation is calibrated to indicate speed. These instruments were essential for navigation before the advent of electronic speed sensors, providing crucial data for plotting courses and estimating arrival times.
