It is the pottery center of China, famous for the purple sand teapots that are acknowledged as the best vessels of brewing tea. I visited the local museum and was surprised to see the large floriated rim on the blue brown flambe glaze in the exhibition case. It is very similar to the large pot being offered here, with the exception of the floriated rim. It is dated before 1949. The date is significant. It was the first year of the Peoples Republic of China. I learned that large pots in the flambe glaze were made in Yixing in the 1920's and 1930's.

This pot presented here was purchased from a dealer near Guangzhou, formerly Canton. His wife was Japanese and they found several of these large pots in Japan. They were used as braziers, filled with hot coals to keep tatami rooms warm. This pot was made of the same material and glazed in the same blue brown glaze. The pot is well made, sturdy, and can be used as a pot for growing lotus and water lilies. It can also be used indoors, as a planter to hold potted plants. See less
