Imagine my surprise when I saw a similar pot on display at the Yixing Museum in Yixing, Jiangsu Province China. This pot was purchased from a furniture maker in a town 30 minutes from Guangzhou (Canton.) He made yearly trips to Japan sourcing for Japanese tansu cabinets and other furniture where he found a number of these pots. They were used as braziers to hold hot coals, a warming device in a tatami room where the heat was contained inside the ceramic units.
This large pot was made with two depressed areas as handles. The glaze is a rich unctuous blue/brown mottled glaze, a glaze that is confused with a similar glaze from Shiwan of Southern China. The pot is sturdy and well constructed. It is an excellent receptacle for a large plant inside or outdoors. Or it can be a pot for water lilies and lotus flowers to grow.
The last image is the photo from the Exhibition of garden pots at the Yixing Museum in Yixing, Jiangxum, China.
