(Victorian symbol of loyalty or mourning) They depict the small, long-eared toy spaniels associated with royalty—especially King Charles II, who famously adored the breed. These figures were produced mainly in the mid-1800s in the Staffordshire region of England, a major center for ceramic production. Individually separated legs give a more three-dimensional sculptural look and are more carefully crafted than the solid ceramic ones. See less
