We slipped over to Nantucket just before the season descended — quiet streets, raw wind off the harbor, and a summer house sale at a grand old shingle cottage whose contents were being dispersed to the world. This pair was among them.
The form is the classic ovoid ginger jar: round-shouldered, generous in hand, each fitted with its original domed lid. The decoration is a study in restrained luxury — full-blown pink cabbage roses set against gilded leaves and sweeping chinoiserie scrollwork in warm gold on an ivory-white ground. The interior of each neck banded in bright burnished gold.
W.T. Copeland & Sons — the direct successor to Spode, Stoke-on-Trent, and one of the great names in English ceramic history. Retailed through Gilman Collamore & Company, Fifth Avenue, New York, the city's most distinguished purveyor of fine porcelain for over a century. Someone bought these properly, and someone kept them well.
Both lids present and matched. Sold as a pair.
