This exceptional set of 1960s Jacaranda rosewood 'Series-7' stacking chairs by Arne Jacobsen represents a rare and compelling chapter of Brazilian modernist history, blending Scandinavian design language with South American materials and craftsmanship.
The Series-7 chairs were originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955 for Fritz Hansen, these examples were produced under license by Hobjeto, São Paulo, as evidenced by the embossed cube logo stamped directly into the metal base and several sticker labels found underneath (see last photo). Hobjeto was a respected Brazilian manufacturer, founded by Geraldo de Barros, known for producing high-quality modern furniture during the 1960s and 1970s, often collaborating with leading design studios and distributors, in this case apparently with Fritz Hansen to license production of this design for the Brazilian market. This practice was popular in that time, as evidenced by other designs from Knoll and Herman Miller licensed to various Brazilian producers.
Each chair bears various signatures, Brazilian tax stamps, labels and tags, including Forma inventory tags (see last photo), linking the set to Forma, the influential Brazilian design firm and cultural hub that played a pivotal role in introducing international modernism to Brazil. The nature of these tags suggests the chairs were either held as Forma-controlled inventory or used within their corporate offices or showrooms rather than mass retail distribution.
The combination of these details make the set ideal for a collector or modern design and history enthusiast, or potentially a museum or gallery for display.
What distinguishes this set is the use of richly grained Jacaranda rosewood, a material prized for its depth, warmth, and increasingly rare availability. The wood’s tone and figure lend these chairs a distinctly Brazilian character, offering a more exotic and materially expressive counterpart to their Scandinavian predecessors. The slender black metal legs allow the sculptural plywood shells to visually float, while the stacking design reflects the functionalist ethos of mid-century modernism.
A rare opportunity to acquire a documented Brazilian modernist interpretation of a globally recognized design form, intellectually rigorous, visually striking, and increasingly sought after by discerning collectors and designers.
