A magnificent 19th century Palatial French Louis XV style bronze ormolu mounted marble top commode by Rosel, exemplifying the exceptional craftsmanship and refined decorative quality associated with the finest European revival furniture of the period. Elegant in form and rich in detail, the commode displays the graceful serpentine lines and sculptural ornamentation characteristic of the Louis XV aesthetic.
The piece is surmounted by a beautifully figured thick marble top that follows the gentle curves of the case, providing both durability and visual contrast to the warmth of the veneered body beneath. The commode features two spacious drawers with carefully selected matched veneers, creating a balanced and visually harmonious façade that highlights the natural beauty of the wood grain.
One of the most striking features of the commode is its extensive use of finely cast and hand chased bronze ormolu mounts, traditionally fire gilded to achieve a deep, luminous gold finish. The quality of the bronze work is exceptional, with crisp chasing and remarkable detail throughout. Most notably, the piece is adorned with two large figural ormolu mounts positioned prominently on the front corners—one on the left and one on the right—serving as dramatic decorative focal points that emphasize the cabinet’s elegant Louis XV silhouette. The commode is further raised on graceful cabriole legs fitted with gilt bronze sabots.
The piece is signed Rosel, a respected 19th century Belgian cabinetmaking workshop based in Brussels, known for producing high-quality furniture inspired by French historical styles. During the 19th century, Brussels workshops such as Rosel were highly regarded for their ability to rival Parisian makers, often incorporating luxurious materials such as marble tops, fine veneers, and elaborate gilt bronze mounts. Their work was widely exported throughout Europe and the United States during the height of the Louis XV and Louis XVI revival periods.
Elegant, sculptural, and richly decorated, this commode represents a superb example of 19th century Louis XV revival furniture, combining beautiful materials, masterful bronze work, and the timeless sophistication of French decorative design. The piece is in good antique condition with the exception of some light surface scratches and minor finish loss as well as some tarnishing to the mounts otherwise really good condition considering age and use.
