This Hildesheimer Rose sugar tong is an example of mid-20th-century German silversmithing, showcasing one of Europe’s most beloved and enduring floral patterns. The design is inspired by the legendary Thousand-Year Rose at Hildesheim Cathedral, translated into an elegant, Art Nouveau–influenced motif that celebrates flowing botanical forms.
The tong is crafted from .935 silver, indicating a purity of 93.5%—slightly higher than standard sterling silver. This higher-grade alloy was commonly used by premium German silversmiths alongside the more typical 800 or 835 standards, resulting in a piece with both exceptional luster and substantial material quality. Hallmarks include the “935” fineness mark and “W. Germany,” placing production in the post-1949 mid-century period.
Elegant and functional, this Hildesheimer Rose sugar tong is equally suited for use in a formal tea service or as a collectible example of classic German silver design.
