A serene mid-century modern landscape that presents a cluster of farmhouses set against expansive, sun-washed fields, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1967.

The composition centres on a group of simplified farmhouses: white-walled structures with gently sloping roofs – arranged in quiet dialogue with one another. Beyond them, bands of cultivated land stretch horizontally toward a dark green tree line and a pale, open sky, creating a sense of stillness and breadth.

Executed in a distinctly modernist style, the painting embraces reduction and clarity. Architectural forms are pared back to essential geometric shapes, with clean rooflines and block-like walls that emphasise structure over detail. Perspective is subtly flattened, allowing the buildings and landscape to sit harmoniously within layered planes of colour rather than deep spatial recession.

The colour palette is warm and restrained. Soft browns and golden yellows dominate the fields, evoking late afternoon light, while muted sage and olive greens define the distant horizon. The buildings are rendered in creamy whites and pale neutrals, their roofs in earthy taupes and browns. The sky, a gentle wash of pale greenish-blue, enhances the tranquil atmosphere and unifies the composition.

Brushstrokes are controlled and deliberate, with broad, even applications of paint that create smooth expanses of colour. Subtle textural variations are visible across the surface, lending depth without disrupting the painting’s calm rhythm. The overall effect is one of serene balance : a landscape scene distilled into harmonious shapes and tones.

This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen lining. The painting is presented in good vintage condition. There is a small loss visible to the upper middle area and another to the bottom left, as well as very small areas of craquelure present, consistent with age. However, these do not detract from the overall attractiveness of the work.
