Originally conceived as a practical working and support surface for traditional interiors, it combines restrained functionality with the warm presence of everyday Japanese furniture.In early Showa Japan, much of daily life took place close to the floor on tatami mats, which encouraged the use of low furniture. Pieces of this kind could serve for writing, reading, storing small personal items or carrying out domestic tasks, reflecting a flexible and essential approach to household design.Its construction is simple yet solid, with closed side panels acting as structural supports and two integrated front drawers beneath the top. The metal handles reinforce its utilitarian character, while the gently raised curved back edge adds a discreet functional detail within an otherwise understated form.The surface retains a rich original patina, with visible wear along the edges, drawer fronts and top.
