Mindrocker chair prototype designed by ineke hans and manufactured by droog design in the netherlands 2004.
this rare rocking chair is an extraordinary example of early 21st-century dutch conceptual design, embodying the radical and playful spirit of the generation that redefined the boundaries between functional objects and autonomous artworks. Made of polyester-covered wood and finished in a matte white paint, the chair reveals a sculptural presence that elevates the familiar typology of the rocking chair into something both minimal and poetic. A subtle but remarkable detail is the imprinted lace doily motif on the backrest, which introduces a soft and tactile contrast to the otherwise stark, monolithic form.
this particular chair was presented at salone del mobile milano in 2004 and is believed to be the only example ever produced, making it a highly significant collector’s piece. It comes with full provenance, including written documentation from droog design, an original dvd, and is published in the droog design book (book not included). On the underside of the seat, the original kunsthal rotterdam sticker is preserved, further underlining its importance and exhibition history. Ineke hans is widely recognized as a key figure within the so-called “golden generation” of dutch designers, alongside names such as studio job, richard hutten, and maarten baas.
this generation shifted the focus of design away from strict functionalism toward conceptual and narrative approaches, where furniture and objects became statements in themselves. This rocking chair is an exemplary manifestation of that ethos: restrained in form yet charged with cultural and artistic meaning. Its angular geometry and carefully proportioned rockers give the chair both stability and a striking silhouette. In combination with its immaculate white surface and playful lace imprint, it achieves a delicate balance between austerity and wit. The chair is in fantastic original condition, with only minimal traces of age, preserving its exhibition-quality appearance. A true rarity and a historically important work, this chair represents a crucial moment in dutch design history and would make an exceptional addition to any serious collection of contemporary design.
