Ellsworth Kelly ( 1923 - 2015 ) was an American born Minimalist Modernist painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with Hard-Edge Painting, Color Field Painting and Minimalism. His works demonstrate unassuming techniques emphasizing line, color, and form. The experimental bold artworks are considered to be some of the most important Modernist paintings of The Twentieth century. Artworks by Kelly are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Betty Parsons ( 1900 - 1982 ) was an American artist, art dealer, collector and gallery owner known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism. She is regarded as one of the most influential and dynamic figures of The American Avant-Garde. The Betty Parsons Gallery opened in 1946 at 15 East 57th Street in Manhattan. At a time when the market for Avant-Garde American Art was minuscule, Parsons was the only dealer willing to represent artists like Jackson Pollock. She showed work by Clyfford Still, Theodoros Stamos, Ellsworth Kelly, and Mark Rothko, among others. In 1951 she boldly gave Robert Rauschenberg his first solo show. Artist Helen Frankenthaler who first met Parsons in 1950 said " That Betty and her gallery helped construct the center of the art world. She was one of the last of her breed ".
By 1956 Betty Parsons, who had opened her new Gallery only four years earlier, was already known for representing new Contemporary American artists. Ellsworth Kelly was introduced to Parsons by art dealer David Herbert who worked at The Sidney Janis Gallery. In 1955 Parsons visited Kelly's studio in Lower Manhattan on Broad Street and offered Kelly his first solo exhibition in The United States. Parsons went on to represent and exhibit the works of Kelly as he became a rising art star with the help of her visionary instinctual bold promotion of his influential emerging artworks.
