A late Qing Dynasty Chinese foot tub constructed from thick elmwood staves, bound by hand-forged iron bands and raised on four integral carved feet.
Originally made for daily utility—bathing, washing, or household use—these coopered vessels were built for durability and function. The softly oval form and gently flared sides give it a sculptural presence, while the darkened interior and layered surface wear reflect years of practical use. The elm has developed a rich, varied patina, with visible grain and tonal shifts that bring warmth and depth. The iron bands remain intact, showing age-appropriate oxidation that adds to its character.
Today, pieces like this transition effortlessly into the interior—equally compelling as a cachepot, tabletop vessel, or collected decorative accent.
JUNE’S THOUGHTS
This is the kind of piece that was never meant to be decorative, yet over time they take on a presence that feels completely intentional. The carved feet lift it just enough to give it structure and interest, while the softened edges and worn surface keep it grounded. I personally like it planted with something simple—orchids or moss—where the contrast between refinement and age comes forward.
But it also shifts easily depending on how you use it—filled with blue and white porcelain spheres in a more tailored room, or holding rolled linen hand towels in a guest bath. It’s one of those pieces that quietly adapts, ready for your home in whatever way feels most natural.
